On June 27th at approximately 5am Hughesville Volunteers were alerted to a house fire on Deer Wood Park Dr in Leonardtown. Tanker 2 responded to assist.

During the course of the fire suppression, firefighters from Naval District Washington (NDW) fell through the 1st floor into the basement. A mayday was declared and rescue efforts began. The firefighter was rescued from the basement and transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Hughesville Volunteer Fire and EMS Department would like to extended our condolences to the family, friends, co-workers and community of the deceased.

Hughesville Volunteers were honored to provide units for the escort of the decedent to Baltimore and blocked several intersection as the procession passed.

Departments from across Southern Maryland, PG County, Anne Arundel County and Virginia responded to and continue to assist in various positions through out this event.
