A Legacy of Service
The Hughesville Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad, Inc. was founded in 1946 through the efforts of dedicated community members who recognized the need for organized fire protection. What began as a small volunteer effort has grown into an essential emergency service organization protecting the citizens of Hughesville and surrounding communities.
Over the decades, the department has expanded its equipment, facilities, and training to meet the changing needs of the community. While the tools and technology have evolved, the core mission has remained the same: protecting lives and property through the dedication of volunteer service.
HVFDEMS Timeline of Events
The destruction of the Hotel Charles by fire in December 1945 made it clear that Hughesville needed organized fire protection. The incident prompted community leaders to take action and begin organizing a volunteer fire department. The event became the catalyst that brought residents together to form a permanent firefighting organization.
A public meeting organized by the Hughesville Lions Club was held at Hughesville High School on May 13, 1946. Citizens from surrounding communities attended and voted to establish the Hughesville Volunteer Fire Department. Administrative and operational officers were elected and volunteers began organizing the new department.

The department ordered its first fire engine from the Oren Fire Apparatus Company in Roanoke, Virginia. To decide between a Ford or Chevrolet chassis, members famously flipped a coin, which resulted in the selection of a Ford chassis. The completed engine arrived on April 29, 1947—a 500-gallon-per-minute pumper that cost $6,440.20 and was affectionately known as “White Flash.” Until the new engine arrived, the Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department had loaned their engine, “Betsy,” to assist Hughesville with fire protection.

In May 1953, the Ladies Auxiliary was officially organized to support the fire department and its members. The group assisted with fundraising, events, and providing meals during training sessions and emergencies. Over the years, the Auxiliary played a major role in supporting the department and strengthening community involvement.
In 1968 the department expanded its services to include emergency medical response. The organization officially became the Hughesville Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad, Inc. During its first months of operation, the Rescue Squad handled more than 100 ambulance calls, demonstrating the growing need for EMS services in the community.
On November 6, 1978, the department moved into its new fire station after years of planning and construction. Members celebrated the milestone with a parade through Hughesville followed by a community celebration. The new facility provided expanded space for equipment, training, and emergency response operations.
On May 20, 1979, the department hosted an official dedication ceremony and open house for the new fire station. Many charter members attended the event and participated in the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The celebration marked an important milestone in the department’s continued growth.
During the 1980s the department continued to expand its capabilities with new engines, tankers, and ambulances. Members also constructed additional storage facilities and improved infrastructure to support the growing fleet. These improvements helped the department respond more effectively to emergencies across the region.
In February 1994, a major addition to the firehouse was completed. The expansion included three new apparatus bays, a meeting room, kitchen, bunk rooms, and office space. The improvements provided the department with the space needed to support its growing operations and volunteer membership.
In 1996 the department celebrated fifty years of volunteer service to the Hughesville community. The anniversary honored the dedication of the charter members who built the organization and the many volunteers who continued their work over the decades. Their commitment helped shape the department into the organization it is today.
Hughesville Fire & EMS continues its mission with modern equipment, trained volunteers, and a commitment to protecting lives and property.
