HUGHESVILLE, MD – At approximately 11:30 a.m. on October 21, 2026, Charles County volunteer fire and EMS departments were dispatched to the 16000 block of Rivers Reach Lane in Hughesville for a reported residential structure fire.

Volunteer firefighters from Hughesville, Dentsville, La Plata, Waldorf, and surrounding mutual aid departments responded to the incident. Hughesville Engine Tanker 2 (ETA2) and Calvert County Engine 22 arrived shortly after dispatch and confirmed an active fire in the basement of the residence.

Hughesville Chief 3A (Duffer) established command and coordinated firefighting operations as additional personnel and apparatus arrived on the scene.

Through the coordinated efforts of responding firefighters, crews successfully contained the fire to the basement, preventing flames from spreading to the upper levels of the home. Despite the successful containment, smoke conditions were reported throughout the residence.

During the incident, one Calvert County firefighter was transported from the scene for medical evaluation after exiting the structure.

Preliminary findings indicate the fire originated in the basement. The Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.

Their coordinated response played a vital role in bringing the incident under control and limiting further damage to the residence.
