On May 25, 2004 at 5:45 am, Hughesville firefighters were alerted to respond to the Charles County landfill on Billingsley Road to assist the Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department with a large trash fire.

Hughesville’s Engine 23 and Tanker 2 responded with five personnel. Waldorf’s Engine 33 positioned themselves on the west side of the fire and directed Hughesville’s Engine 23 to take a position on the east side of the fire. Both engines flowed thousands of gallons of water before the fire was contained.

Tankers from Hughesville, Westlake, LaPlata, Mechanicsville and Baden responded and shuttled water to the fire from a fire hydrant that was miles away. Once the fire was contained, employees from the County landfill assumed control of the situation and used bulldozers, earth-movers and water trucks to complete the overhaul process. Waldorf’s Chief was the Incident Commander.
