On 09-03-05 at 3:03 PM Hughesville volunteers were alerted to a house fire in the 38800 block of Foley Mattingly Road in Helen, St. Mary’s county. Engine 23 responded with a crew of five and arrived as the second due engine behind Mechanicsville Engine 23 and Tanker 2. Smoke was showing from all sides of the house and the crew from Mechanicsville was inside with an attack line. Command directed Engine 23’s crew to the roof to open it up for vertical ventilation. After finishing that assignment the crew assisted with overhaul before being released. Hughesville firefighters operated on the scene for one and a half hours.
