At about 12:30 p.m., Hughesville volunteers were alerted by St. Mary’s County to a reported house fire on Mt. Wolfe Road in Charlotte Hall. Hughesville’s Engine 22 responded with 3 personnel right after the dispatch. Hughesville’s Tanker 2 responded from Mechanicsville, where they were filling-in with LaPlata and Hollywood units. Mechanicsville’s members were attending a funeral for a fellow-member who had recently passed away.
Hughesville’s Engine 22 arrived on the scene within 5 minutes to find heavy smoke venting from the house. The crew entered the house with a hand line and found a fire growing in the utility room near the back of the house. While they were extinguishing the fire, Hollywood’s, Mechanicsville’s and Golden Beach’s engines arrived and pulled a second hand line and entered the house to assist, among other duties.
LaPlata Truck-1 arrived and laddered the roof. Their personnel provided lights inside the house and cut vent holes in the roof to allow the heat and smoke to ventilate.
The crews worked quickly to confine and extinguish the fire and units were back in service in just under 1 1/2 hours. Mechanicsville’s Chief 2B (Mark Pullium) was the Incident Commander.
Special thanks are sent to Prince Frederick VFD for filling Hughesville’s station during the fire.
