On August 24, 2005 at 7:57 PM units from Hughesville, Benedict and LaPlata fire departments were dispatched to the 28600 block of Whalen Road in Mechanicsville for the house fire. Hughesville volunteers responded with Engine 22, Engine 23, Tanker 2 and Chief 2B with 12 personnel. Mechanicville Engine 23 and Hughesville Engine 22 arrived simultaneously, to find smoke showing from a two story single family dwelling. Firefighters found a smoldering fire in the attic which required opening the ceiling to remove burnt insulation. Command held units from Mechanicsville and Hughesville only. Units from Hughesville operated on the scene for a little over one and a half hours.
