On July 8, 2006 at 6:30 PM units from Hughesville and surrounding companies were alerted to Cooke Sweetney Place off of Oliver Shop Road for the vehicle in the water. The 911 caller was unsure how long the vehicle had been there or if anyone was inside it. Squad 2 and Chief 2A were the first arriving and found a minivan completely submerged in a pond that was approximately 1/4 mile in the woods. The roof of the van was visible and it was approximately 100′ off shore. Chief 2 arrived and held the units from Hughesville, the Charles County Dive Team and Paramedic Ambulance 518 to check the vehicle. Once a search was conducted around the vehicle, the process of removing the vehicle began. B-2 was requested to the scene, because the only access to the pond was down a narrow path and the tow truck would not fit. B-2 winched the vehicle from the pond, then pulled it down the narrow path to the awaiting tow truck. No victims were found and the vehicle had been previously reported stolen. Chief 2 had the command and units operated on the scene for a little over two hours.
EMS 2 was unavailable for this call, because both ambulances were committed on other calls.
