On September 26, 2005 at 12:09 AM, units from Hughesville Fire and EMS and surrounding companies were alerted to Leonardtown Road in the area of the St. Mary’s County line for an auto collision with injuries and people possibly trapped. Units from Hughesville arrived to find a two vehicle accident involving a Maryland State Police cruiser and a total of three patients.

Seconds after units arrived, a medevac helicopter was requested because of the severe damage to the police cruiser. Fire and EMS crews worked together to package all three patients and a second medevac helicopter was requested. Both Maryland State Police Trooper 7 and U.S. Park Police Eagle 2 landed on the scene and all three patients were medevaced to area trauma centers. Chief 2A (Herbert) was the Incident Commander and the last unit cleared at 1:17 AM.
