On 04-26-04 at 6:27 a.m., units from Hughesville Fire and EMS, Benedict EMS and the Charles County Mobile Intensive Care Unit were alerted to Leonardtown Road and Gallant Green Road for the auto accident with injuries. Initial 9-1-1 calls were reporting that one victim was unresponsive. Moments later, the Benedict fire department was alerted to respond with an additional “Hurst tool” because more information revealed that at least one victim was trapped in a vehicle.
Hughesville’s Ambulance 28 was the first arriving. They confirmed that one victim was pinned and requested a medevac helicopter to respond. Squad 2 arrived moments later with Chief 2B, Eddie McPherson in charge. The squad crew stabilized the vehicle and began to extricate the victim.
Hughesville’s Engine 22 and Benedict’s Engine 52 arrived and assisted the squad crew with the extrication, which consisted of removing the driver’s door, removing the roof and rolling the dash forward off of the victim. Crews used a variety of tools including hydraulic tools, electric tools, battery operated tools and hand tools to perform the extrication.
Engine 22 established the landing site for MSP’s Trooper 2 on Leonardtown Road, just south of the accident scene. One victim was medevaced to a trauma center while two other patients denied any injuries thus refused treatment and/or transport. Chief 2B (McPherson) was the Incident Command and the last unit cleared at about 7:16 a.m.
