On August 26, 2003 at 0538 hrs., Mechanicsville Fire, Mechanicsville’s & Hughesville’s EMS were alerted to a motor vehicle accident/vehicle overturned with a pedestrian struck on Three Notch Road near the ADF Bingo Hall.
Mechanicsville’s Ambulance 299 arrived on scene at 0552 and found a patient lying in the roadway. Patient care was initiated before a helicopter was requested to medevac the patient. Hughesville’s Ambulance 27 arrived on scene shortly after and found another victim lying next to an overturned vehicle. They began patient care before they requested a second helicopter. A search, by the EMS crews, revealed no other occupants were involved. Mechanicsville’s Squad 2 arrived on scene to assist EMS crews with patient care and removal.
As it turned out, these two patients were the result of two separate accidents. The first patient was from a vehicle that had overturned in the median strip. The second patient turned out to be someone who stopped in their own car to see if he could help the victim of the car wreck. While crossing Three Notch Road, the person who stopped to help was struck by another vehicle and injured.
Maryland State Police Trooper 2 and U.S. Park Police Eagle 2 responded. Mechanicsville and Hughesville Fire Departments were alerted and handled the landing zone. The road was shut down briefly so that the helicopters could land and air lift both patients to area trauma centers. Hughesville units cleared the scene at about 0627 hrs. Mechanicsville stood by on the scene to assist the State Police and County Sheriff’s Office with the investigation.
