On August 8, 2003 at approximately 1105 hours, Hughesville’s Fire & EMS and Benedict’s EMS were alerted to a motor vehicle accident at Gallant Green Road and Leonardtown Road. As Hughesville’s ambulance 27 went on the air, Charles County Communications upgraded the assignment to a “subject’s trapped PI.” Benedict’s Fire Department and the Charles County Mobile Intensive Care Unit were added to the assignment.
Ambulance 27 arrived on the scene to find a two vehicle “T-bone” type accident with one person trapped. After the ambulance crew assessed both patients, it was determined that they both needed to be medevaced to area trauma centers. Hughesville’s Engine 23 arrived on the scene and began working to remove the trapped patient. The engine crew removed the roof and three doors, to free the trapped patient.
Waldorf’s Squad 3 arrived on the scene and assisted in the extrication. Waldorf’s Ambulance 399 was also on the scene and treated and packaged the second patient. The crew from Paramedic Ambulance 517 assisted Waldorf’s EMS crew, while the crew from Medic 21 assisted Ambulance 27’s crew. A third patient refused treatment and was released on the scene.
Maryland State Police (MSP) Trooper 2 landed in a nearby field, and transported the first patient to a local trauma center. MSP Trooper 7 arrived shortly thereafter and transported the second patient to a local Trauma Center. Hughesville’s Tanker 2 handled the landing site for both Troopers. The last units cleared the scene at 1200 hours.
