The first day of Maryland’s bow season for deer sent many hunters to the woods in search of “the big one.” At 4:18 p.m., units from Hughesville Fire and EMS and the Charles Country medic unit were alerted to the area of 16295 Wilkerson Place for a person who had fallen out of a tree.
As units arrived, Charles County Communications advised that they had no information on the extent of injuries, because the caller was on a cell phone with a bad connection. Hughesville’s ambulance 27 arrived and used a 4-wheel-drive vehicle (from a citizen who was near the scene) to make their way to the fallen subject. He was found to be about 3/4 mile off of the roadway into the woods.
A helicopter was requested after the EMS providers finally made it to the fallen hunter and was able to assess his condition. The hunter stated that he was about to sit down in his stand for a long hunt when he lost his balance. He fell about 30 feet to the ground.
Fire and EMS crews used a stoke’s basket to remove the patient from the wooded area and back to the waiting ambulance. MSP’s Trooper 7 attempted to respond but was forced to abort the mission due to the remnants of Hurricane Ivan!
The patient was then transported by ambulance to Southern Maryland Hospital Center.
