October 3, 2004 through October 9, 2004 was the week Hughesville Volunteer Fire and EMS recognized and worked to spread the practice of fire prevention and life safety.

All of our volunteers worked together with each school and day care in and around Hughesville to educate thousands of children, and adults, in the practice of life safety and fire prevention.

To name just a few of the places that were vistied were: Malcolm Elementary School, St. Mary’s Bryantown Catholic School, T.C. Martin Elementary School, Hughesville Child Development Center, Children’s Corner Daycare Center, Little Peache’s Daycare Center and Reigel Beginings Daycare center.

All of the children were instructed on topics about how to check and when to change batteries in smoke alarms, the importance of how to use 911, Exit Drills In The Home (EDITH), Stop Drop and Roll and many other life safety and fire prevention rules. Each visit was wrapped up with an opportunity to go over the apparatus and see a firefighter dressed in full protective gear.

We’d like to thank everyone who visited our station at our Annual Open House and invite you back anytime!

As a reminder, Life Safety and Fire Prevention is not just a week in October. It must be practiced all year long! AND – Don’t forget, when you change your clocks at the end of the month, check your smoke alarm batteries and change them if they need it! If you need help and can’t do it, call our station and we’d be happy to come and do it for you!
