On March 31st at approximately 11:28 pm, Hughesville Volunteers were alerted to the 3000 Block of Heathcote Road in Waldorf for the house fire. Squad 2 made the response. While responding, Waldorf Engine 31 requested the working fire upgrade. Waldorf E31 arrived to find an end of the row town home with fire through the roof extending into the townhouse on the “bravo” side. A second alarm was requested. Upon arrival, Squad 2 assisted with suppression efforts in the primary unit. Shortly after entry, Command sounded the evacuation tones and pulled all firefighters from the structure due to deteriorating conditions. Crews were able to safely enter the “bravo” side townhouse to assist with extinguishment and conduct a primary search. Crews continued to assist and search in the primary unit on Division 2 (2nd floor). After exiting the structure, Squad 2 staged on scene. During a secondary search, crews located deceased occupants in the primary unit. Squad 2 remained on scene until released by command. Squad 2 operated for approximately three hours.
HVFD would like to extend our condolences to those affected by the fire. The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Charles County Sheriff’s Office are conducting an investigation.
