On Friday May 7, 2004 the new radio tower at Crain Highway and Budd’s Creek Road was finished and stands an amazing 450 feet in height. The crew responsible for constructing the tower, installed bolts on the top 100 foot section. The final 50 foot section was so tall; it had to be manually hoisted with ropes and pulleys because the crane would not reach such a height.
By the time the tower is completed, the tower will stand a full 470 feet in the air. The tower will serve most areas in the southern parts of the county. In addition to this tower, there are seven other towers being constructed throughout the county to provide coverage for emergency communications.
The new radio system is expected to be placed in service later this year.
