On Sept 10th at 9:32 am, St Mary’s County fireboard alerted units for a commercial building fire at the McKay’s Food store on Mohawk Drive in Charlotte Hall. While units were enroute to the scene, a St. Mary’s Sheriff’s deputy arrived and reported heavy smoke was showing. Hughesville’s engine 23, arrived on the scene at 9:36 am and confirmed smoke was showing from side one of the structure.
Hughesville’s engine 23 connected to the hydrant and the crew of 4 advanced the 400 foot 1 3/4″ hand line into the store to the deli area, where the fire was reportedly located. Mechanicsville units arrived and entered the structure with Hughesville. The crews found a stove fire with some extension into the hood system and they secured the propane to the stove from inside the deli. The fire was extinguished using a dry chemical fire extinguisher. LaPlata’s truck 1 and Waldorf’s truck 3 arrived on the scene and accessed the roof to check for extension. The truck crews also ventilated the building to remove the smoke and dry chemical powder. The Incident Commander (Mechanicsville’s Chief 2) held the units from Mechanicsville, Hughesville’s engine, LaPlata’s and Waldorf’s trucks.
Units cleared after racking hose and the smoke was removed. The County Health Dept was called to determine to assume control of the scene.
