On Thursday August 12th, 2010 at 1849 hours, as the members were settling in for the monthly business meeting, Charles County Communications alerted Engine Co. 2 to St. Mary’s County for the possible building fire at the McDonald’s. Immediately after dispatch Engine 23 was on the air with 6 personnel and the “A” Chief (S.Herbert) Engine 23 arrived first on scene with nothing evident from sides “Alpha” and “Delta”. Engine 23’s crew stretched the 1-3/4″ cross-lay to the “Delta” side entrance and upon investigation found the building to be charged with smoke. Engine 23’s crew utilized the thermal imager to check for any hot-spots, however nothing was found. Next arriving St. Mary’s Engine 23 reverse laid from Engine 23 to a hydrant on Market Dr while St. Mary’s Chief 2 established the “Three Notch Road Command”. Next arriving St. Mary’s Squad 2 and Charles Truck 3 laddered the roof to investigate the HVAC units. Crews on the roof secured power to the HVAC units and located a HVAC unit with burnt up belts. The assignment was quickly scaled down to the units on scene with the remainder of the units responding being placed in service.
