On Saturday October 6, 2013, President Steve Cook and Safety Officer Tim Goff Sr. attended the housing of new Squad 67-60 in Tremont, Pennsylvania. Squad 67-60 is formally known as Squad 2, which was recently purchased by Tremont. The members of Hughesville VFD were welcomed and given a tour of the newly modified squad and station. The squad has been modified to the needs and requirements of Tremont.

Tremont is rooted deep in their history. They have been providing fire service for 135 years. When they started in 1878, their first piece was a hand pulled steamer and hose reel to fight fires. They still have the original hose reel on display at their station. The town of Tremont held a parade to highlight the new apparatus, which ended with a ceremony at their station. The members of Hughesville VFD were even honored as dignitaries. Speeches from the Department President, and town, county and state dignitaries emphasized what an asset the Squad will make to saving lives and property in their area. Hughesville VFD was presented a shadow box of the old steering wheel, a floor tile displaying a picture of Squad 67-60 on it, and plaque comparing the before and after of Squad 2 and Squad 67-60. These items will be placed throughout the Hughesville Firehouse for display.

The hospitality received from Tremont, and there neighboring companies, was overwhelming. Sometimes we may take our ability to purchase new equipment for granted, but we are lucky. In Tremont, and surrounding companies, they take pride in the purchase of a second hand piece of equipment. We know Tremont will make good use of the “old” Squad 2 for another 20 years of service.

The Hughesville VFD was honored to take part in all of the ceremonial events, which highlighted the true meaning of volunteering and brotherhood. Hughesville VFD wants to thank Tremont Fire Company 1 for the great hospitality, and the Donald Fire Company for their wonderful 911 memorial display.
