After a night of snow, sleet and freezing rain Hughesville Volunteers responded to a total of eight calls throughout the night and early morning hours. Two of these calls were auto accidents on the ice covered roads.

At 3:14 a.m., units from Hughesville Fire and EMS and several surrounding companies were alerted to Woodville Road at the railroad tracks for an auto accident with injuries, involving a train. As Engine 23 and Ambulance 27 approached the area, the train could be seen further north on the tracks. Units were rerouted to the railroad crossing on Poplar Hill Road. Hughesville units arrived to find a sport utility vehicle that was struck by the train and pushed approximately five-hundred feet down the tracks. The vehicle was determined to have been unoccupied. The Charles County Sheriff’s Office was on the scene to investigate the incident.

Two hours later, at 5:15 a.m., units from Hughesville Fire and EMS and the Dentsville EMS were alerted to Oliver Shop Road at Burnt Store Road for a pedestrian struck. Engine 23, Ambulance 27 and Chief 2B arrived minutes later to find bystanders performing CPR on a pedestrian. Ambulance 27 transported the pedestrian to a local hospital with CPR in progress, where he later died from his injuries.

It was reported the pedestrian was walking along Oliver Shop Road after his vehicle became stuck in the snow, after sliding off the icy road. Another vehicle, also sliding on the icy road, struck the pedestrian. The Charles County Sheriff’s Office was on the scene to investigate. Units cleared at 6:32 AM.
