On October 31, 2003 at about 12:30 am, Hughesville’s Fire and EMS and Waldorf’s EMS were alerted to a motor vehicle collision with injuries on Leonardtown Road in the area of the Bryantown Mall.
Hughesville’s ambulance 28 responded followed by squad 2, which was under the command of Assistant Fire Chief Ed McPherson. As the ambulance arrived on the scene, they reported that there was a severely damaged vehicle in the woods and it was on fire. An engine was special requested to respond along with a helicopter and a medic unit. Hughesville’s engine 23, MSP’s Trooper 2 and Charles County medic 2 responded.
The ambulance crew found the patient lying on the ground suffering from traumatic injuries. While they were assessing the patient, another part of the crew from the ambulance used a fire extinguisher to help contain the fire and look for other patients. Once Squad 2 arrived, Assistant Fire Chief McPherson established command and had his crew use a 1-3/4″ attack line to extinguish the rest of the fire.
No other victims were found on the scene, leaving Hughesville and Waldorf’s EMS and medic 2 to focus on treating the one patient. MSP’s Trooper 2 arrived and landed on Leonardtown Road before flying the patient to an area Trauma Center. All units cleared the scene at about 1:50 am.
