On the afternoon of June 11, 2004, units from Hughesville’s Fire and EMS were alerted to the 8500 block of Leonardtown Road for the auto accident with injuries. First arriving Ambulance 27 found a single vehicle accident with the single occupant severely pinned in the vehicle. The vehicle struck a large tree, with the tree impacting the vehicle in the driver’s door.

Ambulance 27’s crew requested the incident be upgraded to a “people trapped collision,” which adds a second hurst tool, a medic unit, a medevac helicopter and “priority 1 response” by all responding units.

Squad 2 and Engine 23 arrived and started to extricate the victim from the vehicle. Firefighters removed the roof from the vehicle and used various hydraulic tools to push the driver’s door and dash off of the driver. Mechanicsville’s Engine 21 assisted with the extrication. Tanker 2 established a landing site for the MedStar medevac helicopter at the landing pad in front of Southern Maryland Electric on Burnt Store Road.
