By Safety Officer Brad Saunders
January 24, 2026

On January 24th, 2026 the Southern Maryland Region went under a snow emergency plan due to inclement weather hitting the area. The Snow Emergency Plan went into effect at approximately 11:49 PM. Hughesville Volunteers pulled together to ensure there was around the clock coverage for the Hughesville community and surrounding areas. The storm brought several inches of ice and snow, along with frigid temperatures and multiple hazards. The snow emergency plan was lifted on January 28th at 4:47pm, 89 hours after its implementation.

During the course of the snow emergency Hughesville Volunteers responded to 37 fire calls and dispatched on 35 EMS emergencies.

In total Hughesville VFD responded to and operated on three working fires, dispatched to three additional house fires, three gas leaks, one explosion with no fire, one rescue incident for a missing person, three transfers to other fire departments (due to high call volume) and multiple EMS related incidents. Hughesville Volunteers maintained multiple crews during the height of the storm to ensure the needs of the community were met.

We would also like to recognize Mrs. Joan Herbert who graciously provided dinner on Sunday night for our members as a heart felt thank you for their dedicated service.

If you would like to become a part of this dedicated department please see our website and fill out an application. No experience necessary. We will provide you all the training required to make you a valuable part of our community and organization.
