Engine 22 (Sgt. Doering) responded with 5 personnel. While approaching the scene Communications advised 22 that CCSO was on the scene and that they believe the driver had fled the scene on foot. Engine 22 arrived to find a utility pole split in half and on fire. The roadway was shut down and a search was started to locate the driver. No patient was found and the EMS units were placed in service. Engine 22 stayed on the scene until the arrival of SMECO and went ready at around 0040 hours. RedStorm is the local vendor for CustomFire Apparatus, Inc, of Osceola Wisconsin, the builder of the new Squad 2. The new Squad will be constructed on a Spartan Gladiator chassis with a tandem rear axle. The stainless steel walk-in rescue body is 26 foot in length. Engine 22 (Sgt. Doering) responded with 6 personnel within seconds of dispatch as the 3rd due Engine. St. Mary's Chief 2B arrived on the scene first and advised of a one story single family with fire from the chimney. St. Mary's Engine 23 arrived first and laid a line at the driveway for Engine 224 to pick up. E22 then arrived on scene and were given instructions to go to the Basement division and clean out the fire box. At that time Command held it with the units on the scene. Engine 22 (Sgt. Doering) responded with 4 personnel, within minutes of dispatch, as the 4th due Engine. First arriving Squad 3 found smoke showing from the front and fire showing from the rear of a single story duplex. E22 arrived on scene as the 4th due Engine and was advised to take RIT. E22 crew carried the RIT pack and necessary tools to side Alpha. While doing their 360 of the house Command advised E22 crew to grab hooks and assist the officer from 11 with the Bravo exposure. Crew opened up the ceiling and walls to find no extension and then was directed to assist Truck 1, Squad 3, Engine 121 and Truck 11 with overhauling the fire rooms. E22 cleaned up and went back in service from the scene at 1722 hours. Squad 2, Chief 2B Mercure, and Paramedic Ambulance 27 responded at dispatch. First arriving Ambulance 58 reported a multiple vehicle accident with multiple entrapments and two confirmed Priority 4 patients. Chief 2B established the Prince Frederick Rd Command upon arrival and upgraded the assignment. This brought additional units from the Tri-County region. Due to the weather conditions MSP Medevac Helicopters were down. However, Air Rescue from Naval Air Station Patuxent River was able to make a transport, with a DES Paramedic aboard to a Trauma Center. The accident involved a vehicle that had been involved in a high speed chase with Police units from multiple jurisdictions. The chase originated near the Gov. Johnson Bridge in Calvert County and proceeded across Rt. 2/4, Rt. 235 and finally ending on the Rt. 5 By-Pass in Hughesville. E-22 and PA-27 responded and upon clearance from the MSP proceeded into the scene to find a single vehicle accident with no injuries. The driver had fled the scene and the passenger was uninjured and in the custody of the police. E-22 crew checked the vehicle for leaking fluids and placed the rest of the assignment in service. These calls consisted from trees on structures, auto accidents, emergency medical calls, power lines down or arching, and down trees across roadways. Approximately 30 Volunteer Fire and EMS and 2 Department of Emergency Services (Paramedic Ambulance Crew) personnel staffed the station over the weekend during the Hurricane. Mechanicsville's Engine 224 arrived on the scene and reported a working RV Trailer fire and shortly after Engine 23 arrived picking up E-224's supply line. Command, Chief 2 Railey, held units on the scene and Tanker 2 placing the rest of the assignment in service. Units operated for just over an hour with the camper being a total loss. Engine 22 & Tanker 2 responded, at dispatched, and upon arrival found a working shed fire which was impending upon two others structures. Engine 22's crew pulled a 1 ¾ cross-lay and with the assistance of Tanker 2 and Engine 224 made a quick knock on the fire. Tanker 2 responded and arrived to find a two story commercial structure, still under construction, with heavy smoke showing from the roof/side Charlie. Crewmembers initiated an aggressive attack to stop the spread of the fire and upon arrival of Trucks 3 and Truck 1 crew's laddered the structure to knock down the fire in the upper levels of the structure. Units operated for just over an hour. The units arrived on the scene to find the motorcycle under a large pick-up truck. The operator of the MC had been pulled free by by-standers. Due to the extent of the injuries the ALS providers requested MSP med-evac transport of the patient to a trauma center. Trooper 7 was alerted and transported the patient to the R. Adams Cowley Trauma Center in Baltimore. MVFD RS-2 OIC had the Three Notch Rd Command and MVFD E-23 set up the landing zone for Trooper 7. The ALS care providers requested MSP med-evac transport of the patient. Trooper 7 was alerted and transported the patient to Prince George's Hospital. RE-222 set up the landing zone. MVFD Chief 2A (Emmart) held the Three Notch Rd Command and units operated on scene for about a half hour. The fire was brought under control and extinguished very quickly but, due to the extensive overhaul operations crews remained on the scene for approx 3hrs. Immediately after dispatch Engine 22(T. Dent) was on the air with 4 personnel followed shortly thereafter by Tanker 2(J. Herbert) with 2 personnel. Engine 22 arrived in staging and was tasked with operating a hose line and "opening up" on side Delta of the structure, while Tanker 2 shuttled 2 loads of water. Engine 22's crew utilized two K-12 saws to cut away multiple pieces of metal siding from the structure. After the structure was deemed suitable to enter, Engine 22's crew assisted in pulling ceiling and "mopping up" All Hughesville units were back in quarters at 01:22 hours Friday morning. Engine 23 (Harris) responded at dispatch with 4 personnel and the tanker wasn't far behind with an additional 2 personnel. While enroute a column of smoke could be seen from about 4 miles away. At that point St. Mary's Communications was upgrading the call to a working house fire. Engine 23 arrived and laid out from New Market Turner Road. Engine 23 reported a two story residence with heavy fire showing from the "Delta" side and the second floor. Tanker 2 arrived and picked up 23's supply line. Crews utilized 4 attack lines to stop and extinguish the fire. Units from Hughesville operated on the scene for a little over 3 hours. A good job was done by all, with no firefighter or civilian injuries reported. Units from Mechanicsville, Hughesville, Hollywood, Benedict and Avenue operated on this fire. Squad 2 (Eckstein) responded at dispatch with a crew of six, leaving 8 personnel back in Hughesville. Numerous callers were reporting a working fire in an attached garage of a single family house. Waldorf Engine 32 and Truck 3 arrived to find heavy fire in the garage with extension to the house as well as the neighboring house on the "Bravo" side. Squad 2 arrived and positioned on side "Alpha" behind Truck 3. The squad crew was sent to the second floor of the fire building to open the walls and ceilings for crews inside. The squad crew also ran lights and assisted with salvage and overhaul when the time came. The squad operated on the scene for a little more than 2 hours. Firefighters from Waldorf, Westlake, Hughesville, La Plata, Brandywine, Baden and Accokeek operated on this fire. Sat, 22 Jan 2011 20:54:58 GMT http://www.hvfdems.org/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=456 Successful Dog Rescue http://www.hvfdems.org/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=455 Again on Christmas Eve, this time at 9:26AM the Hughesville Volunteers were on the road again, this time for an animal rescue. Units were alerted to Gilbert Run Park in the Dentsville area for a dog that had fallen through the ice. Squad 2(Dent), Chief 2A(Herbert) and Dentsville Ambulance 158 arrived and proceeded down to the lake. The complainant pointed out a small dot in the lake that was clinging to the ice. Firefighters Dent and Doering from the squad crew, donned ice rescue suits and personal flotation devices off the squad and prepared to attempt the rescue. Using a boat that was acquired from the park, they made the over 200' trip across the ice to the dog. They pulled the dog into the boat and the boat was pulled to shore by firefighters on land using a tag line that had been previously attached to the boat. The dog was passed off to the EMS crew from Ambulance 158 who assisted the owners with warming the dog. Units operated for just under one hour. Personnel from Bel Alton, Waldorf, Benedict, Newburg EMS, the Charles County Dive Team, Charles County Emergency Services, Charles County Sheriff's Office and Charles County Animal Control were also on the scene to provide support as needed. Tanker 2(Dent) responded at dispatch with four personnel and arrived to find a limo, fully involved. The fire was extinguished and the Fire Marshal's Office responded to the scene to investigate. Tanker 2 operated on the scene for 90 minutes. Engine 22(McPherson) responded at dispatch with a crew of four and arrived to find an ambulance with fire in the engine compartment. Engine 22's crew and Mechanicsville Engine 23's crew made quick work of the fire and returned to service after approximately 20 minutes. The Hughesville Volunteers responded to several incidents for the day, to include two extrications. At 10:16 AM, Squad 2(Stonestreet) and Tanker 2(Hamby) responded to the 9200 block of Prime Court in the Dentsville area for a house fire. After being placed in service, the squad was sent to Crain Highway in the area of Cliffton Drive for the auto accident with people trapped. Units from Newburg arrived and confirmed one person trapped. The squad arrived and with assistance from Newburg and Bel Alton firefighters stabilized the vehicle, lifted it with airbags, removed two doors and displaced the dash to free the trapped occupant. The squad operated for approximately 30 minutes. While returning from the first extrication, at approximately 11:51 AM Squad 2 and Paramedic Ambulance 28 were alerted to Leonardtown Road and LaPlata Road for the auto accident with a vehicle overturned. Engine 22(Chief 2A Herbert) and Utility 2(Chief 2B Hutchinson) responded from the station with an additional 5 personnel, leaving a third crew back at the station. Units arrived to find a single vehicle on it's side with the lone occupant trapped. The vehicle was stabilized and the sun roof was removed to free the occupant. She refused treatment and transport. While the units were committed on the second extrication, Engine 23(McPherson) responded with a crew of four to Keepsake Place in Waldorf for the building fire. Engine 23 was not held and returned a short time later. The day ended with a total of 13 fire calls and 12 EMS calls for the day. The lone occupant was out of the vehicle and refused medical treatment. The squad crew secured the vehicle and cleared moments later.
