First Due Structure Fire
By Safety Officer Brad Saunders
December 31, 2025
On December 31st, 2025 at approximately 10:20 am, Hughesville Volunteers and surrounding departments were alerted to the 5400 block of Gallant Green Road for the structure fire. Chief 2, Engine Tanker 2, Engine 22, Tanker 2 and Paramedic Ambulance 2 made the response.
Engine Tanker 2 arrived on scene to find a pile of rubbish on fire extending to nearby brush. The brush was threatening a derby car, refuse trailer and a double wide storage trailer. Engine Tanker 2 deployed a hand line, quickly controlling the spreading fire. Once the bulk of the fire was knocked, Engine Tanker 2 scaled the assignment back holding Engine Tanker 2 and Tanker 2.
The fire was started by the homeowner who was burning rubbish during windy conditions. Maryland Forestry was on the scene and educated the homeowner on burn regulations. Units operated on the scene for approximately 40 minutes before returning to service.
