By Safety Officer Brad Saunders
February 20, 2025

On February 20th at approximately 6AM, Hughesville Volunteers along with the Charles County Hazardous Materials Team were alerted to Leonardtown Road and La Plata Road for the fuel leak after a collision. Squad 2 made the response.

Squad 2 arrived on scene to find a MVC involving a tractor trailer with a ruptured saddle tank. Squad 2 diked the roadway to prevent the fuel from running off road and downhill. Absorbent was spread on the roadway to contain the fluids leaking from the pick-up truck involved. An ambulance was requested to evaluate the operator of the tractor trailer. Paramedic Ambulance 28 responded.

Upon arrival of the Hazardous Materials Team, Squad 2 assisted with the offload of the remaining fuel. The tractor trailer was grounded and bonded then the fuel was off loaded into a 55 gallon drum. Once complete, the scene was turned over to the Maryland State Police.

Leonardtown Road was closed for approximately four hours after the collision to contain the leak, remove the vehicles and clear the roadway.
