By Safety Officer Brad Saunders
January 18, 2025

On January 18th, 2025, Hughesville Volunteers and surrounding departments were alerted to Leonardtown Road and Old Leonardtown Road for the motor vehicle collision with entrapment and one on fire. Battalion Chief 2, Squad 2, Engine Tanker 2, Engine 22, and Paramedic Ambulance 28 made the response.

Squad 2 arrived on the scene first and discovered a three-vehicle collision with nothing on fire. After a rapid assessment Squad 2 reported two occupants trapped. Units quickly went to work on one of the vehicles. The crew removed the driver and passenger side walls and roof to gain access to the patients. During the extrication, units determined that a total of five patients were involved in the collision, requiring three of them to be transported. A helicopter was requested for two of the patients. Both trapped patients were extricated and turned over to awaiting EMS Units. Paramedic Ambulance 28 was transported to Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) to the landing site, where Trooper 2 handled the transport to an area trauma center. Additional ambulances transported patients to local hospitals for treatment.

Battalion Chief 2 held the command, and units operated on the scene for a little over an hour.
