First Due Working Fire
By Safety Officer Brad Saunders
April 6, 2023
At 11:27 PM, Hughesville Volunteers and surrounding departments were alerted to the 6200 block of Goode Road in Hughesville for the House Fire. Chief 2, Engine 22 and Squad 2 responded. Units arrived on scene to find fire showing from a single family home. Units quickly began extinguishment of the fire as additional units began arriving on scene.
A short time in to the fire, a mayday was called when two firefighters fell through the floor. Additional firefighters quickly rescued the two and assisted them to safety. At the same time, the stairwell to the basement failed and two additional firefighters were also rescued by crews quickly deploying an attic ladder for those firefighters to self extricate. One firefighter from a neighboring department was transported to the hospital for minor injuries.
The fire was brought under control in approximately 10-15 minutes and units operated on the scene for approximately three hours. During this incident, multiple other units were working on an earlier house fire in Marbury to include Hughesville Tanker 2.
