On February 20th, just before 7 a.m., Hughesville Volunteers were dispatched to Walnut Circle in Mechanicsville, St. Mary’s County, for a reported house fire with individuals trapped inside. Chief 2A, Engine 22, Tanker 2, and Engine Tanker 2 responded to the call. While en route, St. Mary’s Communications received multiple reports indicating fire throughout the home.

St. Mary’s Chief 2 was first to arrive and found a two-story, split-foyer house with fire visible from the second floor and extending through the roof.

Engine 22 arrived shortly after, confirming heavy fire and advancing a hose line to begin firefighting operations. Crews encountered a rapidly spreading fire, with hoarding conditions inside the home making access extremely challenging. During efforts to bring the fire under control, a partial collapse of the structure occurred. Due to hazardous conditions, the Incident Commander determined that fire operations would remain defensive. Firefighters worked for an extended period to contain the blaze.

Once the fire was under control, crews searched the residence and located the occupant, who was found deceased inside the home.

The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the origin and cause of the fire, while the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is conducting a death investigation.

The Hughesville Volunteer Fire Department extends its condolences to the family and friends of those affected by this fire.
