Hughesville Volunteers Recognized for their Dedicated Years of Service

On Friday, January 3rd at the Charles County Volunteer Banquet, many volunteers throughout the County were recognized for their countless years of service to the citizens of our County.Two volunteers from Hughesville Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad were recognized for dedication and commitment in keeping Hughesville, and Charles County, successful and safe.

Mike Roberts was recognized for his 50 years of volunteer service to the citizens of Hughesville and Charles County. Mike has devoted most of his time in a leadership position within our department, serving as Chief and/or President for nearly 20 years combined. Mike currently serves as 2nd Vice President and offers his wisdom, experience and guidance to every layer of membership. He has served on various building improvement committees, a south-side Rescue Squad group and many County-wide initiatives to enhance the Charles County volunteer system. Mike Roberts is a true testament to what selfless volunteering in your community is all about, and we are grateful for his continuous commitment to our Department.

Scott Herbert was recognized with the 2024 Charles County Volunteer Fire Association Memorial Service Award. With over 38 years of volunteer service, Scott has served Hughesville VFD & EMS in every line officer capacity and has currently served as the Department Chief for over 10 years. He is consistently recognized for his time and work at Hughesville VFD & EMS, receiving the Zach Fowler Firefighter of the Year award twice. In 2018, Scott was an integral part in establishing the beginning of the fire service in the Dentsville area. In addition to his time at Hughesville, he served as the Charles County Deputy Fire Chief for the last four years, where he offered assistance and guidance for all volunteers within the County. He was integral in the development of the Battalion Chief program. Scott continues to assist with various initiatives to improve our volunteer system including the coordination of Regional Grants with other departments for large purchases of firefighting equipment and utilizing relationships to assist in fleet purchases throughout the County. Chief Herbert has become a pillar within our County volunteer system and an asset for the future generations.
