House Fire

By Engineer Brad Saunders
November 23, 2022

On November 23rd at approximately 5pm, La Plata Volunteers and surrounding departments were alerted to the 9000 Block of Harmony Hill Place for the house fire. Immediately after dispatch, units responding advised they could see a column of smoke upgrading the assignment to a working fire dispatch. Hughesville Volunteers were alerted and Tanker 2 along with Engine Tanker 2 responded. First arriving units arrived to find a two story single family home with fire showing. Due to the area being a non hydrant area, a water supply task force was requested by command. Units made an aggressive attack but due to the quick advancement of the fire, a defensive operation with ladder pipes was set up. A little over an hour into the incident the fire was brought under control. Hughesville Volunteers operated on the scene for approximately 2 1/2 hours before being released by command.

During this incident Hughesville Volunteers had an additional crew at the station for the Squad. In addition we would like to thank Hollywood VFD in St Mary’s County for providing a fill in crew at our station, as well as the other departments who provided fill in crews for our surrounding departments while we operated on the scene.
