Snow Emergency

By Engineer Brad Saunders
January 3, 2022

In the early morning hours of January 3rd, the Southern Maryland area was struck hard with a heavy wet snowfall. During the course of the event the Snow Emergency Plan was activated. The snow moved out in the early afternoon and conditions improved. In the overnight hours and morning of January 4th, the freezing temperatures entered and caused additional problems with our area. Over the 48 hours of this event, Hughesville volunteers responded to more than 50 calls for service to include trees down, power line emergencies, medical assists, structure fires and motor vehicle collisions. Hughesville Volunteers maintained multiple crews in the station to respond to the needs of our community.

Hughesville Volunteers would like to remind our residents to please keep off the roadways during these events unless you have to be out. We would also encourage you to try and keep a clear path to your house in the event an emergency arises and we need to help you.

Also please keep in mind power outages are frequent during these events please run your generator outside and several feet away from your house. Generators should not be run inside the house, garage or other enclosed spaces.

Units: Hughesville VFD and Rescue Squad
