Child Safety Seat Law Changes

October 1st is fast approaching and HVFD Volunteers would like to inform the public about a change in the laws effecting child safety seats.

As of October 1st, 2022 children under the age of 2 in a motor vehicle must be secured in a rear facing child safety seat until the child reaches the height or weight limit designated by the manufacturer of the child safety seat.

This change will significantly enhance the child’s safety should they be involved in a motor vehicle collision. Studies have been done by Children's National Medical Center which support these changes.

Should Law Enforcement stop a motorist for this violation, the operator of the vehicle may be subject to a $50.00 fine under Maryland Transportation Article 22-412.2.

If you have any questions related to the law, please contact your local law enforcement or the Maryland State Police. If you need help installing your child safety seat or having someone inspect it to ensure it is installed correctly, contact Maryland Kids In Safety Seats or Maryland State Police to schedule an appointment.
