On July 12th, Charles County was placed under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning by the National Weather Service. As a result of the weather, the Dentsville and Newburg areas of Charles County was plagued with trees down, wire/transformer problems as well as several calls for trees on houses. As a result of the multiple calls, County Fire Chief Kaufmann, Chief 2 Herbert (Also Deputy County Fire Chief), Special Operations Chief Gimmel, and multiple departments sent apparatus and personnel to the area. Over 60 volunteers from the county responded to provide assistance with removing trees from blocking the roadways and assessing structures that trees collapsed on. Hughesville Volunteers responded to the area to assist with the weather related emergencies as well as maintained an additional crew in the station.

We would like to take the time to remind citizens that during these times, please remain indoors and off the roadways. During these events a lot of the roadways become impassible and response times for emergency crews are significantly delayed. Please contact 911 only if you have an emergency. Your local volunteers work diligently through these events to ensure that the community remains safe and that crews can access you should an emergency arise.
